At PRS Group, we were honoured to be selected as a partner for a significant project alongside a renowned demolition framework contractor. Our collaboration involved the demolition and clearance of three redundant gas-holders located at the Provan depot in Glasgow. This challenging project commenced in January and took just over one year to complete by February the following year.
The project encompassed several crucial tasks, including the dewatering and de-sludging of the three holders, as well as the demolition of one above-ground holder and two below-ground holders. Notably, these below-ground holders are reputedly the largest in the UK, adding to the complexity of the undertaking. It is worth mentioning that the frames of the above-ground holders hold listed status, requiring careful consideration during the demolition process.
During the course of the project, approximately 135,000 cubic meters of former holder water were generated. To ensure strict adherence to environmental regulations, PRS Group implemented a comprehensive filtering and testing process. Under proper licensing, the filtered water was safely discharged into the sewer system, minimising any impact on the environment.
A substantial volume of treated holder sludge, weighing 2,500 tonnes, was carefully removed from the site. Following the removal, the sludge underwent high-temperature incineration, a sustainable approach to waste management. PRS Group’s commitment to environmental responsibility guided the decision to recycle 100% of the resulting ash. Moreover, to facilitate access into the tanks, PRS Group refilled the space with 7,000 tonnes of appropriate material, meticulously selected to meet the project’s requirements.
The demolition of the three gasholders yielded approximately 5,000 tonnes of steel. Recognising the importance of responsible resource utilisation, PRS Group ensured that 100% of the recovered steel was recycled. By partnering with reputable recycling facilities, the steel was processed and repurposed, contributing to the circular economy and minimising waste.
